My research: In the 1960s, my first cousin Jerry DENNEY conducted the earliest known family research for our GILES line. Though she knew that our great-grandmother Dicy GILES had been married twice and that she had several children when she married our great-grandfather James Calvin “Calvin” GILES, she did not know Dicy’s maiden name or the name of her first husband. My own questioning of family members over several years had uncovered very little more about Dicy than Jerry had discovered. I refused to give up, however, and now I can happily report that my research was the first to uncover documentation that definitively links Dicy GILES of Paint Rock, Tennessee to

Survey of McPherson Cemetery in Ten Mile
[McPherson Cemetery in Meigs Co, TN (the land was originally part of Roane County)]

Andrew Barton McPHERSON and Parthenia HALE married abt 1808 in Roane County, Tennessee. Barton was the son of Daniel McPHERSON and Susannah KINCHELOE. Pathenia’s father was Hezekiah HALE; her mother’s name is unknown to me at this time. The cemetery, also known as the Ewing Cemetery, is on private land.
Caveat: In my online photo album of this cemetery, I have listed relationships for some of the individuals. In doing that, I have followed traditional children’s lists for Barton & Parthenea. Researchers need to be aware, however, that there is a problem with listing the following as children of theirs simply because Parthenea’s age at their birth would have been forty or over: Thomas Hawes, b 1831; Barton, b 1833; Margaret, b 1835; and Nancy, b 1839. I have not yet independently documented all of the couple’s children’s births. I believe some of the assumptions about parentage have been based on a child’s presence in the McPHERSON household for censuses which did not ask about relationships. In the 1850 census, for example, John (age 22), Thomas Hawes (age 19) and Margaret (age 15) are all listed in the over-60-couple’s household; because that census did not ask about household relationships, we cannot assume that the minors are children of the head of household.

on a trip to roane county, tennessee last week, i was successful in locating the burial location of daniel mc pherson (22 oct 1755 - 17 oct 1844) and in establishing that he may well have had some familial connection to the henry mcpherson living near rockwood in the first half of the nineteenth century. you can see henry | here |, for instance. (use your browser’s find function or control f to locate him on the page.)

robert bailey at the roane county heritage commission (my home away from home when i’m away from home) showed me the watts bar reservoir cemetery book - something i have somehow managed to miss until now….

the book has a grave site map of the old mcpherson cemetery on the north side of the river. out of about 72 graves, only nine are said to have been identified in 1940 when this survey was published. happily, one of them is daniel mcpherson’s and another is henry mcpherson’s. on the plot map, the two are seen at graves 44 (daniel) and 42 (henry). the graves are sort of kitty-cornered from one another. like this:

the cemetery book is vague about how to get to the cemetery. robert bailey says it’s off new hope road. here’s a link to roane co, tn cemeteries on topo-maps | link |.
on that page, scroll down to mcpherson cemetery and a small topo-map will open up. i have also just learned that the cemetery is variantly called the rogers cemetery.
