what follows is a paste-in of a text file into which i dumped census notes from my pdf record of family members affiliated with roane county, tennessee. as you’ll likely see, i hate census work, but i do it. unfortunately for others, i don’t standardize the way i extract or present the information. i’m all for whatever gets it down for me. i’m putting these here in hopes i’ll save others a little bit of tedious footwork and in the hope of tracking others in my family lines.

some surnames in this file:
giles, jiles, majors, smith, houston, patterson, waller, renfro, bowman, enoch, phillips, carter, lorance, & many more…

use your find function (control “f”) to locate a name or year

Polly Ann, 9 mos, b TN - dau of Susan and Houston GILES (see 1860 Gentry Co, MO census)
The ages of those in the household with Polly and William disincline me to list them as children of
the couple. Polly would have given birth to Houston when she was about 43 years old. My guess at
this time is that Houston is likely a grandson or nephew. Susan, as the 1860 census entry in Gentry
Co, MO makes apparent, is Susan (CARTER) GILES, Houston’s wife. Polly Ann is the daughter of
Susan and Houston GILES.
Despite my uncertainty about this household and its lineage in general, I am currently linking
Houston to William and Polly GILES as his parents. Researchers should keep in mind that I have
absolutely nothing to substantiate this analysis at this point (5 Sep 2005).

Analysis:
Both household members - the male and the female - were between twenty and thirty years old,
giving them birth ranges of 1818-1820. Benjamin GILES was born abt 1819, and Telitha abt 1819,
according to their 1860 Gentry Co, MO census entries. Later census entries confirm that Telitha
could not read or write as an adult.
Enumerated two individuals after Benjamin GILES is William GILES (p 179, Monroe Co, TN), who is
believed to be Benjamin’s father. See William GILES (1) for those census details.

then indicates that Benjamin’s household is not numbered. The microfilm image for the family,
however, does run the two entries together, making Benjamin’s household 181/183. No relationship

[father’s birthplace illegible but looks to be TN]
There are several anomalies and errors in this census entry.
Where is Hattie for this census? There is an age discrepancy for Amanda here. According to the
1860 and 1870 censuses, she would have been about 21. Hattie would have been about 19. Is this
actually Harriet “Hattie” and *not* Amanda - maybe a case of a bad informant or a slip of the tongue?
Has the enumerator conflated the entries of the two girls?
Where is Alice for this census? She would have been about 17. She was old enough to have married
by then. Had she?
There’s a question about the surname on this censu, too. On the microfilm, the initial letter is likely J,
as it is transcribed by the LDS, but it could well be a G instead - the capital letter being formed as the
small letter is, except bigger - a frequent variant in handwriting. If it is a J, this is the only real
instance I’ve seen of Calvin’s family members using the JILES spelling although his brother Samuel
and all his descendants did use it.
“Cumberland” appears in several places up and down the first column (location) on the page.

Notes:
Dicey and Elbert are apparently living in the same area as
James Harvey Keylon and Mary, who appear on next census page (194, line 99 ff
family 71/73). Mary and Jim Keylon lived on a huge farm eventually bisected by Hwy 58 south out of
Kingston. They were located about a mile or two north of Ten Mile. The two springs now called Keylon
Springs on current maps were part of their property.
Mary Haggard Ellis Keylon was the mother of Cora Pickens Ellis who married Dicy’s uncle, William
Morgan Giles. J. H. Keylon was Mary’s second husband. Though there’s no direct family relationship
between Mary and Dicy, it appears that they may have known one another.
Also: Co-researcher Jerry Bryan wrote, “Notice that in the 1900 census entry, Dicy’s mother was
correctly identified as having been born in North Carolina, but in the 1910 census entry Dicy’s mother
was incorrectly identified as having been born in Tennessee.” It should also be noted that Dicy’s
middle initial is recorded as “L” for this census. Oscar — appearing in Jerry’s inital transcription as
“Acer” (from someone else’s transcription, I wonder)– is also misspelled as “Osacar”. Historical
discrepancies and spelling changes such as these abound in this family’s ancestry and continue to
make it difficult for us to trace Smith, England, and Giles family ancestors.

Houston, 23, b TN, occupation “none”
Susan, 18, b TN - Susan (CARTER) GILES

There is an age discrepancy for Amanda here. According to the 1860 and 1870 censuses, she
would have been about 21. Where is Alice for this census? She would have been about 17. She was
old enough to have married by then. Had she? Hattie married in 1876 and is with her husband John
CARROLL in Roane Co’s 17th District for this census.
There’s a question about the surname on this census. On the microfilm, the initial letter is likely J,
as it is transcribed by the LDS, but it could well be a G instead - the capital letter being formed as
the small letter is, except bigger - a frequent variant in handwriting. If it is a J, this is the only real
instance I’ve seen of Calvin’s family members using the JILES spelling although his brother Samuel
and all his descendants did use it.
“Cumberland” appears in several places up and down the first column (location) on the page.
The first page of this district has Kingston written darkly and prominently at the tope of the page but
there is no indication of why this is so. Is District 1 in Kingston? As of 22 Apr 2005, I don’t know.

Calvin is without Dicy for this census. She is believed to have died around 1895. He is farming and

this point.

Calvin, as James C. Giles, is still with his daughter Nannie for the 1910 census. Nannie has
married Ike MILLER (formerly LOCKMILLER).
Calvin’s reported information for this census:

It is interesting to me that Nannie’s husband reports for this census that he was a Union Army

As of Sep 2004, my best guess is that Old Stage Road was near the area known as Rhea Springs
and would have been at the time not in Spring City itself but to its east. Calvin’s son Will is living in
Spring City for this census. Current road directions indicate that Old Stage Road is about 30 miles
southwest of Paint Rock where Calvin and his wife Dicy lived at the time of her death and about
eighteen and a half miles northwest of the Decatur PO area where he and Nannie lived on the farm
for the 1900 census.
VERY interesting to me, too, there is also an Elisha K. GILES, born in TN, also living on Old

“Rebecca” is Nannie Mae (GILES) MILLER. She was widowed in 1913 and so was not married at the
time of this census as is reported here. She was married for the first time when she was 31 as this
census entry shows. We are currently uncertain (Jun 2004) about whether or not Rebecca may have
been one of her actual given names, but it seems unlikely. “Claude” is her father James Calvin
GILES. “I. Jerry” is Isaac Jerry, called I.J. by family members for most of his life, though he later
went by Jerry publicly. [Source for IJ information: Margaret (GILES) Bennecker, 7 Aug 2004

The family was on Jackson St in the 2d district for the 1920 census and on West 4th for the 1930
one. One possibility that might explain some of the errors or discrepancies in this census entry might
be accounted for if they were recent residents on the street and the informant knew them only
slightly.

John C. GILES, 1
(Unproved
Relationships) (Abt
1815-Aft 1880)
• Census 1830 Roane County, Tennesee, USA 15
John GILES, aged between ten and fifteen, appears independently on the 1830 Roane County
census. The only one in his household, he is enumerated as being a free white male between 10 and
15, giving him a birth range from 1815 to 1820.
What may or may not be significant is that on the following page (p 17) Richard HYDEN (aka
HYTEN, HIDEN, HEITEN, etc) is enumerated. If I am correct in assuming that this John GILES is the
brother of Benjamin GILES, both of whom appear in the 1860 Gentry Co, MO census near other
GILES men believed by me to be brothers or uncles of the two men, the HYDEN proximity in this
census might be a clue helping to establish that John is part of “our” GILES line. Benjamin GILES is
said to have married Talitha/Telitha HYTEN, daughter of Richard HYTEN, in Roane County. Telitha’s
sister Mary Ann HYTEN had married Joseph LORANCE in Roane County only months before, on 29
Oct 1829. Anderson HYTEN served as bondsman for that marriage, and he, too, appears on the page
following John GILES in this census.

• Census 1840 Roane County, Tennessee, USA 2
In the 1840 Roane County federal census (page 46), we find one William GILES 10001-10001 and
in the very next entry: Issac Gallyan 012001-210001 whose census data lines up closely with my
research so far on Margaret “Peggy” Hensley GILES’s maternal uncle. This 1840 Roane Co GILES
family is likely an entry for our William and Peggy. One male under five years old fits son William
H. GILES born about 1840; one between 20 and 30 fits William himself, born about 1810. The
females “fit,” too: one under five could be daughter Nancy, born about 1838, and the one between 20
and 30 years old fits our Peggy Hensley Giles, born about 1819.

• Census 4th Civil District,
Decatur PO
15 Jun 1900 Meigs County, Tennessee, USA 27
Nannie is 28 and single, living with her father Calvin for this census. She has no occupation listed.
The report says she, unlike her father, can read and write. She is recorded here as having been been
born in Tennessee of parents both born in Tennessee. (Dicy, her mother, however, was born in North
Carolina.)
• Census Civil District 2 (on
Old Stage Road)
19 Apr 1910 Rhea County, Tennessee, USA 37
Nannie has married Ike MILLER. She, her father, and two daughters appear in the Miller household
on Stage Road for this census.
Nannie’s husband reports for this census that he was a Union Army soldier. In the same house, her
father reports that he was a Confederate soldier.

The census entry has some apparent errors and internal inconsistencies. Nannie’s father is reported
as having been born in North Carolina although his own entry (Calvin Giles)in the preceeding line
reports his having been born in Tennessee. It’s likely that somehow the birth location for her parents
was simply transposed and should have read that Nannie was born in TN; her father, Calvin, in TN;
and her mother (Dicy Smith) in NC.

(Abt 1810- )
• Census 1840 Roane County, Tennessee, USA 30
